What is furoshiki?

Furoshiki is Japanese traditional cloth, used for wrapping various goods. For example, wrapped goods are clothes, foods, books, small box, etc.

Furoshiki has been used from great long time ago in Japan. And so, there are various size, fabric and design.

For example

1.I use furoshiki to wrap the lunch box. (photo

2.I use froshiki to separate inside of the traveling case, going to trip. (photo

3.In the mean time, furoshiki becomes an artistic interior in the room. (photo

Detail of how to use are shown here.

How to use Furoshiki

There are various ways of wrapping with Furoshiki.

1. In case of wrapping a box or square goods
(1)Hirazutumi (just wrapping)
(2)Hitotsumusubi_tsutsumi (wrapping with one knot)
(3)Futatsumusubi_tsutsumi (wrapping with two knots)
These are basic three ways.

(1) Hirazutumi (just wrapping)
a.Turn over the furoshiki and spread it. Then put the box on the two diagonal lines (fig.1-1).
b.Turn up the near side of furoshiki (fig.1-2)
c.Turn up the left side and the right side. If both sides are left over, turn down the both sides (fig.1-3).
d.Lastly turn up the opposite side (fig.1-4)

fig.1-1 fig.1-2
fig.1-3 fig.1-4

e.Variation: in the case of cylindrical goods
The process is similar to the above process to process c. After process c, roll up the cylindrical one with the remaining furoshiki (See the fig.1-5, fig.1-6.)

(2) Hitotsumusubi_tsutsumi (wrapping with one knot)
a. Turn over the furoshiki and spread it. Then put the box on the two diagonal lines (fig.2-1).

b. Turn up the near side of furoshiki and turn down the opposite side. Even if the turned down side are left over, you should not wrap, lifting the box. (Because the wrapping Furoshiki gets loose.) (fig.2-2)

Fig.2-1 Fig.2-2

c. Turn up the left side and the right side. At this moment, assist of the inside by another hand makes the corner form beautiful, as you can see in fig.2-3, 2-4.

d. Knot the both ends and finish (fig.2-5)!

(3)Futatsumusubi_tsutsumi (wrapping with two knots)
a. Turn over the furoshiki and spread it. Then put the goods on the two diagonal lines (fig.1).

b. Knot the near side and the opposite side tightly. If not tightly, Furoshiki has lost its shape while carring. (fig.2)

c. Knot the left and right sides tightly as well. (fig.3)

I am going to explain the other ways and information.
